Central City
Central City is the New Orleans neighborhood that connects the Garden District to Broadmoor and the CBD/Warehouse District with Uptown. It is bounded by the Pontchartrain Expressway, Louisiana Avenue, Claiborne Avenue and St. Charles Avenue. When coming uptown down St. Charles Street from the CBD, you cross through Central City. Along the way are apartment buildings, chain restaurants and businesses that appeal to tourists. But as you go farther north and deeper into Central City, the area becomes more residential.
Streets running north and south in Central City are named for Greek mythology muses. Today Central City’s core neighborhood life is formed around its many churches, most notably maybe St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. In recent times the area has seen an uptick in renovations.
One of the notable boundaries of Central City is New Basin Canal, where a good deal of Irish laborers lost their lives in the 1830s while constructing the canal. The first settlers of the area were Irish. Germans and Jews built churches and synagogues and also small business, which were mostly located on Dryades Street.
